Under the Military Selective Service Act, all male United States citizens and all male persons who reside in the United States (excluding legally admitted non-immigrant aliens), are required to register with the Selective Service System within 30 days of their 18th birthday. Although men ages 18 through 25 are exempt from the registration requirement while incarcerated, upon release they have 30 days in which to register if they have not yet reached their 26th birthday Federal and some state laws require proof of registration from men who are required to be registered with Selective Service when they apply for certain benefits, such as student financial aid, federal and state employment, and job training under the Job Training Partnership Act. Men who fail to register may permanently forfeit their eligibility for these benefits. In addition, failure to register is a felony offense.
